10 Minute Teaching Example
5th Grade Boomwackers - 11/18/2022
Teaching Reflection
Areas to improve:
1:16/1:47/2:40 could use better classroom management to make sure all students are engaged
3:20/8:05/10:11 could have transitioned topics a bit faster to leave less down time for the students
4:40 Could have spent more time walking around checking on all students
5:40 Directions could have been more clear to avoid students hitting the boomwackers when they weren't supposed to
6:08* could have given a better explanation - we are preparing the students to help coach the kindergarten classes in the boomwackers
6:27/7:20 used “you guys” which isn’t necessarily too bad but could have chosen a more neutral term
8:36 Technical difficulties (LOL)
9:28 Could have addressed the pattern being two groups of three rather than just having them hit the boomwackers six times
Strength:
1:02 good use of student engagement to go over the rules
1:08/2:33/3:21 good use of student modeling rather than talking at the students
2:10 guide UDL and engagement with all students by walking around
3:08 getting down to the students level, bringing in a student who did not have a partner so they could be a part of the activity
4:04 Representation - showed which hand being used in multiple ways
5:00 Clearly articulated the activity, had students repeat it back and adapted quickly when it didn’t go as planned
6:08* Addressed a students concern quickly to keep the lesson on track
6:38 quickly and calmly addressed a student who took another students instrument
6:50 pulled in a term we learned at the beginning of the lesson
8:00 praised the students on how quickly they are learning information to help create a safe space
8:46 while walking around checking on students, addressed the question of a student who was learning faster than their peers to keep them engaged
9:15 bring in students prior knowledge and class work by asking math question related to the music
If I were to teach this lesson again, I would have liked to have smoother transitions between teach activity. I spent a lot of my time talking to the students rather than letting them play and you can see that in their attention span as the video goes on. They get more antsy to play and thus are playing more out of turn so I spend more time focusing on classroom management.
Overall, I feel as though this was a very good example of my teaching style. I made sure to keep my students engaged and check their understanding as well as reviewing prior concepts. I could have used more goal setting at the beginning of the lesson by explaining that they are going to be helping out younger students in upcoming weeks. These goals would keep the students a bit more engaged overall.
